Ogma is a macOS application that turns AI into a personal translation and writing assistant - without compromising user privacy. Built by Berlin-based indie developer Robin Schönwald, Ogma was designed from the ground up to give users full control over how and where their text is processed.
At the heart of Ogma is its unique flexibility: users can choose between Apple Intelligence (fully on-device), an integrated translation model (TranslateGemma 4B - available after a one-time in-app download, no external tools required), local large language models via Ollama or LM Studio (no internet required), or any cloud API compatible with the OpenAI standard - including OpenAI GPT, Anthropic Claude, or self-hosted solutions. Up to six AI models can be configured simultaneously and switched with a single click, making it easy to compare quality or optimise for speed versus privacy on a per-task basis.
Beyond simple text translation, Ogma handles entire documents. Drop in a PowerPoint presentation, a Word file, an EPUB e-book, or a video subtitle file (.srt), and Ogma translates the text content while preserving the original formatting and timing codes exactly. The app also includes a screenshot translation feature that captures any screen area and translates it via OCR, a multi-translation mode for broadcasting content into several languages at once, a glossary for enforcing consistent terminology, a text-improvement mode with six distinct style profiles including De-AI Style Cleaning, and a full chat interface for open-ended conversations with the configured AI.
